Mats Nordstrom |
| Photographs by Mats Nordstrom are the product of an intuitive exploration of his emotional landscape—often they encapsulate moments from the artist’s past. Informed by a childhood in Sweden, Nordstrom’s recent work includes Bathhuts (nostalgic dusk portraits of the Swedish seaside) as well as a series of high-contrast black and white photographs titled Remnants. Remnants explores the transformative effect of light and shadow on outmoded household utensils, shot against a marred aluminum sheet. Strong side-lighting throws crisp shadows, which lend these allegories of a simpler time three-dimensionality and a sharp graphic presence. Remnants and Bathhuts exemplify Nordstrom’s tendency to gather inspiration from the timeline of his personal history. |
